SENTENCE TYPE
AND
SUBJECT AND VERB AGREEMENT

SENTENCE TYPE
1.      Simple Sentence
2.      Compound Sentence
3.      Complex Sentence
4.      Compound Complex Sentence

SIMPLE SENTENCE : has the most basic elements that make it a sentence : a subject, a verb, and a completed thought.
[The cunning politician][attacked] his opponent at the rally the other days.”

Characteristic :
·         Has an independent clause
·         No dependent clause
·         Verb pattern:
S + V
S + V + O
S + V + O + C
S + S + V + O
S + V + V + O

COMPOUND SENTENCE : refers to a sentence made up two independent clauses connected with coordinating conjunction.
[ My house guests] [returned] from a long day of shopping and went straight to
              S                       V                                                                 V
bed.” ( simple sentence )

[ My house guests][ returned] from a long day of shopping and we decide to stay
              S                        V                                                               S      V
at home instead of going out.” ( compound sentence )
Characteristic :
·         Has two independent clause
·         No dependent clause

   F    A     N    B   O   Y    S   [ ; ] Coordinating Conjunction
For  and  nor  but  or  yet  so

COMPLEX SENTENCE : sentence is made up of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses connected to it.
“ Yusuf was tired, but he finished his works.” ( compound sentence )
“{ Although Yusuf was tired}, [he finished his works.]” ( complex clause )

          {Dependent Clause}         [Independent Clause]
Characteristic :
·         Has one independent, and one dependent clause

COMPOUND COMPLEX SENTENCE : a sentence with two or more independent clauses and at least one or more dependent clauses.
As soon as the sun set, people on the beach started to leave, because the day was

already dark and they in fact were tired.”
                                      S         V
Characteristic :
·         Have conjunctions, compound and complex sentence followed by S + V
·         Two or more independent clause
·         More dependent clause
Independent clause is a group of words that can stand on its own as a sentence : it has a subject, a verb, and is a complete though.
Dependent clause is a group of words that also contains a subject and a verb, but it is not a complete thought.

SUBJECT AND VERB AGREEMENT
1.      The dog growls when he is angry.       ( Aware to the number )
Singular
The dogs growl when they are angry.
Plural
2.      The dog, which is chewing my jeans, is usually very good.  ( aware to the adjective clause )
The dogs, which are chewing my jeans, are usually very good.
3.      The color of the flowers is beautiful.      ( aware to the prepositional )
The colors of the rain bow are beautiful.
4.      There is a problem with the balance sheet.   ( aware to the “ there “ or “ Here “ ) singular
Here are the papers you requested. (plural)
5.      The cow and the pig are jumping over the moon.  ( Aware to the conjunction “ and” ) plural
The red beans and rice is my mom’s favorite disk. (singular)
6.      No smoking and drinking is allowed every man and woman is required to check in. ( Aware to the words “no” , “every”, “each” ) singular
7.      All of the chicken is gone.     ( aware to the words “ all, some, half, none, several” ) singular
Some of the chickens are gone.
