CHAPTER II
SENTENCE TYPE AND SUBJECT AND VERB AGREEMENT

 1. Simple Sentence
 A simple sentence has the most basic elements that make it a sentence : a subject, a verb, a completed thought.
 Characteristics :
Has an independent clause
No dependent clause
Sentence patterns  
* S + V                     * S + S + V + O + C
* S + V + O              * S + V + V + O + C
* S + V + O + C
 Example :
 " The cunning politician attacked
                    S                       V the opponent at rally the other day "
  2. Compound Sentence
A compound sentence refers to a sentence made up of two independent clauses ( or complete sentence ) connected to one another with a coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunction are easy to remember if you think of the words " FANBOYS " ( For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So ).

Characteristics :
Has more than one independent clause
 No dependent clause
Example :
" My house guests returned from a
                S                   V
long day of shopping and we
                                          C    S                                                       decided to stay at home instead of going
     V          
out "
 3. Complex Sentence
 A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and one dependent clause connected to it. A dependent clause, or complete sentence, but it lacks one of the elements that would make it a complete sentence. Dependent clause begin with subordinating conjunction. ( except FANBOYS )
 Characteristics :
has one independent clause and one dependent clause
Example :
" Although Yusuf was tired, he finished
          C               S            V          S    V
his work "
4. Compound Complex Sentence
A compound complex sentence is made from two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
 Characteristics :
Mix between compound and complex sentence
Has two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses
Example :
  As soon as the sun set, people
        C            S             V      
on the beach started to leave
 because, the day was already
     C                 S        V  
 dark and they in fact were tired "
             C      S                 V          

 Subject and Verb Agreement

Aware to the number
 * The day grows when he is angry.
       S.Singular             V.Singular
 * The dogs grow when they are angry.
        S.Plural                    V.Plural
Aware to adjective clause
 * The dog, which is chewing my jeans, is very good.
    S.Singular   V.Singular                 V.Singular
 * The dogs, which are chewing my jeans, are very good.
    S.Plural           V.Plural                      V.Plural
Aware to prepositional phrase
 * The color of the flower is beautiful.
           H.N      Prep.P            V.Singular

 * The color of the rainbow are beautiful.
          H.N        Prep.P               V.Plural

Aware to the words " There" and "Here"
 *There is a problem which the balance sheet.
   Singular
 *There are a papers you requested.
       Plural
Aware to the double subject
 * The cow and the pig are jumping over the moon.

 * The red beans and rice is my mom's favorite dish.

Awarte to the words " no, every, each " alaways followed by singular verb
 * No smoking and drinking is allowed.

 * Every man and woman is required to check in.

Aware to the words " both, half, several, none "
 * All of the chicken is gone.
               S.Singular  V.Singular
 * Some of the chickens are gone.
                               S.Plural V.Plural
