Definition, Function, Types and Examples Noun

Noun is one of one of the parts of speech in English. Parts of speech are the kinds of words in the English language. Noun is a word used to name an object such as people, objects, places, and concepts / ideas. Noun can be shaped singural (single) or plural (plural).

Function of Noun :
1. as a subject in a sentence.
Example:
Joni has read the book for three hours.
The Lion ate a goat.

2. as a complementary object in a sentence.
Example:
Mr. John is a doctor.
She was a chef.

3. The direct object (direct object)
Example:
He bought a car last week.
Messi kicks the ball.

4. as an indirect object (indirect object)
Example:
She Gave her mother a flower.
My father brought my sister a cute doll.

5. as an adverb (preposition)
Example:
She has arrived at the airport.
Students study English at the school.

Types of Noun

Noun consists of several types, here are the types of noun:
1. countable and uncountable Noun
1.Countable and uncountable Noun
 countable noun is a type that can be calculated and has a number. example:
• Mango -> Mangoes (Mangga-> some mango)
• Apple -> Apples (Apel-> some apples)
• Man -> Men (Men -> some men)

Uncountable noun is a type that can not count them except make use of the media. example:
• Sugar
• oil
• water
• sand
If using the media, then the uncountable noun can be calculated. example:
• A spoon of sugar
• A bottle of oil
• A glass of water
• A sack of sand

Differences of countable and uncountable Noun
• countable noun is a collection of objects that can be calculated and uncountable noun is a collection of objects that can not be calculated.
• countable noun need not make use of the media to be counted while the uncountable noun must use media
• every noun is countable noun form could amount to a single (singular) or plural (plural) while not uncountable noun.
• If a single (singular) in a countable noun is not in adding the suffix 's' or 'es' if plural (plural) then add the suffix 's' or 'es' whereas in uncountable noun nothing additional.

2.Proper Noun and Common Noun
Proper noun is a type of nouns in the classification of its highly specific (usually use capital letters in the first few letters) Example:
• Gramedia
• Jakarta
• Jogjakarta
• Indonesia

Common noun is a type of noun classification very common or general. example:
  • city
  • shop
  • market
  • town

Differences of Common Noun and Proper Noun
• Proper noun is a noun classification specifically or specifically while common noun is a noun in general classification
• Proper noun starting with a capital letter of each sentence while common noun not use all capital letters.

3.Abstract Noun and Concrete Noun
Abstract noun is a noun that can not be observed with the five senses. Example:
  • Love
  • Hate
  • romance
  • feel
  • idea
Concrete Noun is a noun that can be observed with the five senses. Example:
  • Book
  • school
  • house
  • bread
  • people
Differences of Abstract Noun and Concrete Noun
• Abstract noun is a noun that can not be observed with the senses while the concrete noun is a noun that can be observed with the five senses.
• Abstract noun usually only be felt or thought can not be in touch, while the concrete noun can be touched or seen.

Collective noun is a noun that consists of the name of the group. example:
  • Class
  • Team
  • bucket
  • pair
