Adverbs
Definition of Adverb :
a word that describes a verb, an adjective, another
adverb, or a sentence and that is often used to show time, manner, place, or
degree.
Full definition :
A word belonging to one of the major form classes in
any of numerous languages, typically serving as a modifier of a verb, a
preposition, a phrase, a clause, or a sentence, expressing some relation of
manner or quality, place, ime, degree., number, cause, opposition, affirmation,
or denial, and in english also serving to connect and to express comement on
clause content
· Adverbs
of Manner
Some adverbs and adverb phrases describe te way
people do things. They answer the question “how?”
Example :
1. I
prefer to live peacefully to hate oter people even tough they tease me.
2. The
rain come suddenly without little warning
3. You
will wipe my LCD screen gently, will you ?
· Adverb
of Time
Some adverb and adverb phrases answer the question “when?”
They are called adverb of time.
1. The
children recently went home
2. I
paid a call my friend in the hospital last week
3. The
factory has operated since 1998
· Adverb
of place
Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question “where?”
they are called adverb of place
1. He
is watching the footballmatch there.
2. Alma
works in Bandung for a while.
3. My
apartment faces north.
4. They
built a house ten miles west of Cilegon.
· Adverbs
of Frequency
Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question “how
often?” they are called adverbs of frequency.
1. I
always study after class
2. I
usuallywalk to work
3. I
often read in bed at night
4. I
hardly ever get angry
· Adverbs
of Duration
Some adverbs and adverb phrases answer the question “how
long?” they are called adverbs of duration.
1. We
didn’t stay long at the meeting
2. There
was no news of him for a year
3. It
has been raining since morning
4. There
was no light in the whole city till 10 o’clock
· Adverbs
of Emphasis
We have seen that most adverbs describe verb, but
remember that some adverbs also describe adjectives or other adverbs. They are
usually used to add emphasis
Example :
1. She
sing quite beautifully
2. Anna
can run really fast
