Adverb
What is Adverb
?
An adverb is a word which we use to modify
the meaning of adjective, verb or other parts of speech. It is one of the parts
of speech which tells us how, where, when, in what manner, and to what extent
an action is performed in the sentence. Some of the adverbs end with 'ly'
(which are used to express how an action is performed.
For example:
- I
placed the flower pot carefully on the table.
('carefully' word is an adverb in this sentence and shows the example of
how action is performed)
- My
friend walks gracefully. ('gracefully' word is an adverb in
this sentence and shows how to modify the meaning of verb)
Types of
Adverbs
Ø Adverbs of Manner
These adverbs tell us that in which
manner the action occurs or how the action occurs or occurred or will occur.
Examples :
She speaks loudly.
He was driving slowly.
Ø Adverb of Place
Adverb of place tells us about the
place of action or where action occurs/occurred/will occur.e.g. here, there,
near, somewhere, outside, ahead, on the top, at some place.
Examples :
He will come here.
The children are playing outside.
Ø Adverb of time
These adverbs tell us about the time
of action. e.g. now, then, soon, tomorrow, yesterday, today, tonight, again,
early, yesterday.
Examples :
I will buy a computer tomorrow.
The guest came yesterday.
Ø Adverb of frequency
Adverbs of frequency tell us how
many times the action occurs or occurred or will occur.e.g. daily, sometimes,
often, seldom, usually, frequently, always, ever, generally, rarely, monthly,
yearly.
Examples :
He goes to school daily.
She never smokes.
Ø
Adverb of Number
Adverb of number is used to show
number of action of the verb in a sentence. Adverbs of number are like firstly,
secondly, once, yearly, never, twice, lastly, etc.
Example:
He saw me once. (in this sentence, 'once' is an adverb of
number, however it can also be an adverb of time depends on how it is used in
the sentence).
Ø Adverb of Duration
Adverbs of duration tell us how
long something happened.They include; briefly, forever, long, shortly,
permanantly, temporarily etc.
Example:
"They were occupied." = "They were briefly occupied." -
In this sentence briefly shows us the duration.
ü Relative Adverbs
Relative
adverbs are adverbs are used to connect a sentence or clause. Relative adverb
basically divided into three types, namely:
1. WHERE
Where the function
explained noun of place or type of noun that states place (example: place,
country, city, etc)
Example:
- The
seat where we sat last Saturday is still free.
(The noun is the seat. The relative adverb is where. The adjective
clause identifying the seat is shaded.)
2. WHEN
When explained noun of
time (noun stating the time, for example: time, moment, March, day).
Example:
- I can remember a time when I could eat four hamburgers.
(The noun being identified is a time.)
3. WHY
Why
explain the reason noun.
Example:
-We do not know the reason why he left..
(The noun being identified is the reason.)
(When the relative adverb why modifies reason, you can omit the
word reason to avoid a tautology, i.e., unnecessary repetition.)
-We do not know why he left.
Note: When a noun like seat has accompanying modifiers (here, the
seat), it is known as a noun phrase.
